Review: Sun Tail Mermaid Tail with Monofin
By P. Sheng on 13 August 2018 - (9 min read)
If you’ve ever dreamed of being a mermaid (or a merman), you’ll appreciate this review of the Sun Tail Mermaid Designer Mermaid Tail with Monofin. We purchased two of these from Amazon for my daughters, ages 9 and 11, and after an entire summer of use, we were so satisfied with these mermaid tails that we wanted to do a detailed product review for the benefit of our readers. We know most of you have kids who would absolutely love a mermaid tail like this. In fact, most of you adults would love one as well!
Before we get into the review, we want to make clear that we are not affiliated with Sun Tail Mermaid in any way. We are not being compensated or influenced by them in any manner so you can rest assured that this review is honest and unbiased. In fact, the first time we ever heard of Sun Tail Mermaid was after spending hours looking at reviews of various mermaid tails being sold on online (there are tons), and we picked the Sun Tail Mermaid brand based on our research.
Overview
These mermaid tails come in a variety of color choices and sizes. The fabric is advertised as 80% polyester and 20% spandex, and the best way I can describe how they feel is characterizing them as having a softer, stretchier wet-suit type feel. The removable monofin is made of hard plastic and fits inside the mermaid tail cavity. Overall, the quality of materials seems good and everything has held together nicely after an entire summer of use, several times a week, by two rambunctious girls.
These Sun Tail Mermaid Designer Mermaid Tails are a little pricier than some other mermaid tails on Amazon, but we opted to spend a little more in hopes of getting a better product after reading reviews and reviews of other brands. At the time of this post, child sizes (6/7, 8/10, and 10/12) cost $79.95 at Amazon with free shipping, and teen/adult sizes cost $89.95 with free shipping. Based on our experience so far, we think the price was worth the money. In terms of reviews, these mermaid tails currently have a 4.3 star rating after 270+ reviews on Amazon. The reviews also have a Fakespot A rating, but note that changing the size and color sometimes spits out a different Fakespot grade for some reason.
While there are other mermaid tails out there with decent reviews, what stood out to us is that Sun Tail Mermaid clearly states on their product page that it backs their mermaid tails with a one year warranty with free replacements for rips, tears, and breaks. Other brands of mermaid tails, such as this one, takes you to another page for warranty information and then states that you have to contact the seller for warranty information. We like to have the warranty information in writing at the time we buy, and knowing that my girls would use these multiple times a week for the summer, the one year warranty was a big deal to us.
Fitment
Currently on Amazon’s site, 87% of reviewers have reported that these mermaid tails “fit as expected”. Indeed, in our own experience, the fit was spot on. We purchased the child 8/10 size for my 9 year old daughter (who stands at 4'3" and wears a shoe size 2) and the 10/12 size for my 11 year old daughter (who stands at 4'9" and wears a women’s shoe size 8). The fit was perfect for both of them, including the waist size, length, and size of the feet inserts to the monofin, with room for each in either direction to accommodate different body types.
The waist size for the 8/10 was about 23 inches in circumference and the waist size for the 10/12 was about 25 inches, give or take an inch or two (it was hard using a tape measure to measure the circumference of the waistband). The waistband is a little stretchy–think of it like a skirt with an elastic band that can stretch several inches around. So the waist size can easily expand several inches.
The length of the 8/10 from the waistband to the top of the monofin (where your feet enter) measured around 28 inches. And the length of the 10/12 measured around 32". After you insert your feet into the monofin, pull the mermaid tail over your legs and around your waist.
The feet inserts have plenty of room. My 11 year old has large feet for her age and the 10/12 fit just fine. If you have smaller feet, the straps across the monofin hold your feet securely to give you good flapping power and the sock-like construction wraps around your ankles like a glove (think of snorkeling fins with neoprene sleeves that you slide your feet into).
Ultimately, if you’re not sure about what size to get, we noticed that Sun Tail Mermaid is great about responding to questions posted through Amazon’s product page (click on the “answered questions” link). A lot of potential customers have asked questions along the lines of “what size should I get” and the company looks to be on top of responding with recommended sizes. One thing we’d like to see on the product page though is the company offering free exchanges and free return labels to take some of the worry off parents (these things aren’t cheap and sizing is important). We will note though that we saw some customer reviews stating that the company did indeed offer free return labels for exchanges; but you have to contact them and ask for it and it’s unclear whether this is only on a case by case basis.
You Need the Monofin if You Want to Swim
If all you want to do is look cool at the pool, then a mermaid tail will do that for you. However, if you also want to swim with the mermaid tail, it’s imperative that you get a mermaid tail that comes with a monofin. If you search for mermaid tails on Amazon, the description should clearly specify whether the monofin is included or not. Sun Tail Mermaid sells tails without the monofin, and they’re about $50 cheaper. If you couldn’t tell by now, the monofin is basically a hard plastic fin with feet inserts (as shown above) that you insert into the mermaid tail and use as a giant flipper.
Without the monofin, trying to swim would be like slipping into a potato sack and jumping in the water. We had our girls try swimming without the monofin just to see what would happen and they could barely propel themselves to stay afloat. The fabric tail just folded with the water. In sum, make sure you get a monofin if you want to swim.
Our Girls Love Them
If you couldn’t tell from all the images, our girls absolutely love these mermaid tails. They’re able to zip around the pool and do fun splashes, and other kids at the pool are always mesmerized. In fact, every time we go to a public pool, multiple parents ask us where we got them from. There’s really no question that your child will love one of these. What else can we say?
Tips for Taking Care of Your Mermaid Tail
The weakest point in these mermaid tails is clearly the corners of the monofin, where the points of the fin meet the fabric and where the corners touch the floor and sides of the pool. Sun Tail Mermaid provides protectors that attach to the corners of the monofin to protect them from abrasion. Think of them as thick pieces of clear tape that wrap around the corners to protect against rips and tears. Below is a close up of the protectors.
While the protectors have served us well, you’ll still want to take some precautions. We tell our girls that they need to be sitting right next to the pool when putting on or taking off their mermaid tails. You don’t want to put these on by your cabana and then have to hop 20 feet of cement to get to the pool. That will not be good for preserving the life of your mermaid tail. When in the pool, try not to touch the bottom of the pool (the monofin should make it pretty easy to stay afloat) or swim close to the sides where the corners can bang up on the sides of the pool. Also, another thing worth mentioning, we took these to the lake where our girls immediately realized that the sand and rocks of the lake bottom would not be good for their mermaid tails. They opted not to use them close to the shore where they would certainly get scratched and torn. However, they did put them on in the boat in the middle of the lake (where the water is plenty deep) and I can tell you that going for a swim in the middle of a large lake takes the mermaid experience to a whole new level.
As far as caring for your mermaid tails when not in use, the monofin is removable so that you can throw the fabric portion of the mermaid tail into the washing machine. Per Sun Tail Mermaid’s instructions, wash in cold water and let them air dry. And of course, don’t bleach these things.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we’re very satisfied with the Sun Tail Mermaid Designer Mermaid Tail with Monofin and highly recommend them to our readers. They’ve lasted our girls an entire summer with tons of use, and our girls got to basically live out their dreams of being mermaids. You can grab one on Amazon today!
